Your Colorado Buffaloes took a hard fight to the Mountain Lions but fell short. The Buffs took the lead on the power-play with a goal by Adam Steinberg. UCCS responded three minutes later, then they added another before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead. Zach Blake gave the Lions a 3-1 lead, then Zach Clawson responded for Colorado to cut the lead to 3-2. Clawson then scored one of the goals of the season to start the third period, and Mitch Steinberg added a power-play goal to give Colorado the lead. Then, shortly after, Jesse Ernst scored to tie the games. After a controversial goaltender interference call went against the Buffs, the Mountain Lions had a power-play to begin overtime. Zach Blake took a one-time shot to end the game and give UCCS the 5-4 win. Colorado is officially eliminated from tournament play, meaning the end of the season for the Buffs.
Notes: This is Jake Sundling and Mitch Steinberg's last game, as they will be graduating in the Spring. Zach Clawson had two goals and Kyle Smith made 23 saves in the loss. Keep up with the Buffs throughout the off-season as they will provide updates such as fundraising, sponsorships, etc! LAKEWOOD, CO- Your Colorado Buffaloes took down the UNC Bears last night at RMR. Zach Clawson started off the scoring 1:09 into the first period. CU added another goal and ended the first period on top 2-0. The Buffs then exploded to start out the 2nd period with four goals within two minutes to gain a 5-0 lead midway through the period. UNC came back to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Buffs then called a timeout, and they never looked back after that. Colin Luben scored before the end of the second to give the Buffs the 6-3 lead, then the Buffs scored five goals in the third period to take the game, 11-3. Colorado will look to take their streak into the semi-finals against UCCS in Lakewood this afternoon at 2 p.m!
Notes: Colin Luben and Zach Clawson each had a hat-trick in a single period, with Colin Luben doing it in the second period and Zach doing it in the third. Frustrations for UNC were apparent as they took many unnecessary penalties. A scrum broke out at the post-game handshake, but nothing more came out of it. Kyle Smith made 18 saves in the win. Your Colorado Buffaloes will open the 2011 Regional Playoffs against University of Northern Colorado this Friday night. This is the classic 4th vs. 5th seed match-up, with Colorado earning the 4th seed. UNC won the last two meetings against Colorado, but the Buffs will look to beat them in the most important game of the year. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m Friday night at RMR in Lakewood. DENVER, CO- Your Colorado Buffaloes started off the weekend with a fantastic win against School of Mines this past weekend. The Buffs jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the second period with a shorthanded goal by Zach Clawson. Zach also scored two minutes into the second period to double Colorado's lead. Chris Rea then scored a great goal to pull one back for Mines. The Buffs then scored three times in the third period, and Mines scored a mere consolation goal and the Buffs pulled off the win 5-2. Colin Luben had a goal and an assist, and Kyle Smith was solid in net, making 21 saves in the win.
Colorado took their confidence into a tough game against UNC Saturday evening. Even though the Buffs put up a great effort, the Bears came back from 2-1 down to take the game 3-2. UNC survived an onslaught from the Buffs, including a powerplay in the last minute in the game. Colorado (6-10) will face UNC this Friday night at RMR in Lakewood to kick off the Regional Playoffs. Notes: The win against School of Mines was Colorado's first win in more than two years. Mines won the previous 4 and tied 1 (4-0-1) since 2008. The UNC game was a very physical game, with an altercation involving Colin Luben and a UNC player at the end of the game. |
